The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.
